Book Review: The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

snowchildWhere is the winter weather?  Well if you are looking for a book with a wintry theme, look no further than  debut novel, The Snow Child, by Eowyn Ivey.  This book is based on the Russian fairy tale , Snegurochka, or Snow Maiden. The author has taken the liberty of moving the setting of this story to Alaska during the early 1920’s as childless couple, Jack and Mabel, try their hand at homesteading.  The couple have gone to Alaska to make a fresh start after Mabel’s miscarriage.  One day while outside, the couple make a snow child out of  the snow.  The next morning their snow child is gone, however, they see glimmers of a child lurking in the woods near their farm.  Has their snow child come to life?

Ivey has taken a spin at a classic fairy tale and made it her own.    I literally felt the chill in my bones from Ivey’s beautiful descriptions of her native Alaska and thoroughly enjoyed the author’s version of this classic fairy tale.  Her is the trailer here:
